PSA (Peugeot/Citroen) XUD Diesel Engine - How did they get it so right?

I think that manufactures didn't help with recent diesel engines when they started to introduce 18,000-20,000 mile service intervals! I good way to sludge up the engine.

Your right about egr valves, they seem to cause endless amounts of problems. I have also noticed that dpf's (diesel particulate filter) are causing a lot of hassle and big expense if the vehicles aren't driven 'right'

Couldn't agree more. Long life service intervals; less oil disposal in theory, more broken engines in practice. Thinner oils too - higher mpg, supposedly more protection at startup but MOFT can't be maintained so long term durability compromised. Throwaway indeed.

EGR valves coke up inherently but light duty, long periods of idling i.e sitting in traffic and poor fuels exacerbate the problems. They effectively make a diesel run less lean than they should since a portion of the induction air is replaced by 'inert' exhaust gas so that thermal NOx from Oxygen availability is reduced; hence the reduction in overall efficiency and mpg. A good thrashing (not from cold!) can help keep the 'pipes' clean. Many a diesel fails the MOT emission test only to pass after a blast up the motorway in a lower gear; borderline painful but gets things hot and free.

And one final thing! EGR VALVES! These infernal NOx reducing devices ruin performance, coke up inlet manifolds, wear out inlet valves, reduce mpg and cost the earth to replace. Thankfully my trusty 405 doesn't have one but i have disconnected the ones on the 9-5 and L200 pickup. Wifes Bora is ok for now but de-activating these damned things or blanking them off is the way to go.

EGR valves  I have one on a 54 plate 1.7cdti astra van, done under 70,000 miles and you guessed it egr valve needs replacing, it cannot be stripped down and cleaned as its a sealed unit. Approx £300 quote to replace it, a step backwards in reliability in my mind.

never understood these long service intervals myself i service my l200 every 4500 to 5000miles without fail as the old model i had had a knackered turbo at 20000miles i blame it on the oil not being changed regular as i bought it reconditioned the turbo and serviced it regular and it was never a problem again.

those pug engines are A1 :) known of a couple that have done well in excess of 200 000 miles !

Also there used in toro movers too just keep the rad clean and they go for ever !!

Got an old golf at work with 150 000 or more miles on it and hell that still goes like a rocket ! :)

I can categorically confirm that a Bosh pump is the only way to go- I blew a Lucas pump on a TUD5 up after just a tank and a half of veg oil...:lol:

I think the Bosch pump can be tuned better than the Lucas too for more power/better fuel economy

Yep only the bosch will do on SVO or other veg oil; lucas/cav is very fragile.

Err sorry but the XUD is inferior to the totally legendary XD1 (2.1L) XD2 (2.3L) & XD3 (2.5L) which were by far the best engines with extreme reliability, longevity and the ability to be happy starting heavy loads it tick over as well as being perfectly able to pull seamlessly threw the entire rev range uniformly until the governor cut in regardless of if they were N/a, td or tdi.
