PSA (Peugeot/Citroen) XUD Diesel Engine - How did they get it so right?

I think that manufactures didn't help with recent diesel engines when they started to introduce 18,000-20,000 mile service intervals! I good way to sludge up the engine.

 

Your right about egr valves, they seem to cause endless amounts of problems. I have also noticed that dpf's (diesel particulate filter) are causing a lot of hassle and big expense if the vehicles aren't driven 'right'

 

never understood these long service intervals myself i service my l200 every 4500 to 5000miles without fail as the old model i had had a knackered turbo at 20000miles i blame it on the oil not being changed regular as i bought it reconditioned the turbo and serviced it regular and it was never a problem again.

those pug engines are A1 :) known of a couple that have done well in excess of 200 000 miles !

 

Also there used in toro movers too just keep the rad clean and they go for ever !!

 

Got an old golf at work with 150 000 or more miles on it and hell that still goes like a rocket ! :)

Also, does your engine have the lucas or bosch pump? Thanks.

 

I can categorically confirm that a Bosh pump is the only way to go- I blew a Lucas pump on a TUD5 up after just a tank and a half of veg oil...:thumbdown::lol:

I think the Bosch pump can be tuned better than the Lucas too for more power/better fuel economy

Yep only the bosch will do on SVO or other veg oil; lucas/cav is very fragile.

Err sorry but the XUD is inferior to the totally legendary XD1 (2.1L) XD2 (2.3L) & XD3 (2.5L) which were by far the best engines with extreme reliability, longevity and the ability to be happy starting heavy loads it tick over as well as being perfectly able to pull seamlessly threw the entire rev range uniformly until the governor cut in regardless of if they were N/a, td or tdi.

Agree to disagree on that one. They were rough! Good but rough! And so less successful.

do you know how many different makes of vehicles the world over had the xD's in over the years or how at the time there was nothing to touch them with little in the way of weak points and was even available as a marine version from the factory and have been built and fitted to vehicles and boats on every continent between 1960 & the present day! ;)

 

Yes the XUD are good BUT they are not very good in harsh environments due to there obvious inherent weakness that the xD’s don’t suffer from.

Perhaps it's the way you say it rather than what you say???! :thumbdown:

 

The thread is about the XUD and at no point suggests it is the arena for know-alls to argue the toss and try to get one over on it. Admiration of great engines is welcome; not though the wearying drip of "I know more than you do", for crying out loud.:bored:

 

Yeah, the Ford Sierra for one - like that was a hot vehicle!

BTW - I marinised an XUD9A and it was utterly superb in the 20' tosher it now powers...
