Whilst I agree with your sentiment especially re security, this isn’t America with tons of public land anyone can take a rifle or bow on to hunt.

let’s be realistic, any form of legal ‘feeding yourself from hunting’ in this country requires more than a small degree of privilege- either paying for shooting rights or being chummy enough with large landowners.

It's not that easy in most of the USA either surprisingly.  DNR land is still heavily regulated with ballots/ tags/ seasons/ species/ gender and bag limits.

I'd be digressing but would be intrigued to know anyone who feeds themselves through hunting (perhaps with some wild plant collection thrown in) anything more than 50% of the time in the UK. Sure the odd deer, some rabbits, birds but to do it for any more than a nice to have every now and then?

They are tools for a job that needs to be done.

Whilst there are sections of people for example target and practical pistol types that's more a hobby, almost all others even your back garden pest shooters see them as a necessity.

They're a tool, like your vans full of differing chainsaws, we just extend the distance once we get into SGC & FAC.

Venison is very cheap at the minute if you know where to go, deer numbers are up massively therefore so are culls, I shoot more than I buy meat wise as do quite a few I know, rabbits and birds 🤔no thanks not unless things get really bad under Labour as for picking wild plants to eat 😳bollocks to that.
That’s a good pal of mines take for a night, he  never buys meat, modern thermal kit makes night work very effective, fair bit of meat to be had off 10 roe.

Back when interest rate were 17.5% and I had to buy my house off of myself after my first wife wanted half of everything I was living off the barrels of a gun . Mostly pigeon and rabbit . With the price of cartridges at the time I could not afford to miss .

Are they allowed to be taken at night?

Or is it because it is a cull for control?

I’ve got pretty much a full Roe deer in the freezer, quite a few arse cheeks from a wild boar a friend gave me.  Also buy an organic free range lamb from a farmer every year, butchered and vacuum packed.

It will see me through for a while.

Are you asking about rabbits or deer, as yes it's perfectly legal at night.

Rabbit is classed as vermin so fill yer boots legally speaking and landowners are obliged to control them, deer is more regulated depending on area.

The only nighttime restriction is birds, an old law that effectively said no lamping whilst they're roosting.

Shot hundreds of rabbit over the years so know the craic with them.

It was the deer I was questioning.  Only allowed to shoot them in Norway during daylight hours.  Meaning late December you are knocking off around 1600.

Yes under licence for culling is fine. It’s not my thing but a very effective way of doing the job by all accounts.
One of my sons is grafting up at Kishorn, place is lifting with deer, bold as brass too.
