Are you sure about the fuel efficiency, Dean? I think an hydraulic splitter on a tractor at tickover is using a tiny fraction of the fuel being consumed.

 

I'd love to see a test comparing the energy being used by a PTO hydraulic splitter and an electric motor driving an hydraulic pump intermittently. I'd bet a pound to a penny that the electro-hydraulic splitter would cost only pennies a day compared with the PTO splitter.

 

Anyone tried a test like this?

HI JOHN we use a mf 165 tractor and pto splitter its very good on fuel mate the tractor only takes 35lt and last weeks on a good size splitter say 20/30 tons you need a large electric motor that will cost more to run then my mf165 thanks jon

'Ere we go again then, derv has crept up the 10p it went down earlier in the year. Crude prices going even higher... Firewood will have to go up this winter..., can't keep it cheap any longer...

Not sure about that, there will be a great many arb's who have had a quite year, where they have had time to process plenty of the arisings.

 

Add to that all the people who are doing firewood as a supplement to their income and I don't see prices rising much.

 

But I could be wrong.

After last winters poor log sales I came to the conclusion that if you have a harsh winter and you have the stock ready you can clean up and make a good living. If its a mild winter forget it. Even with the increase in fuel prices people will be selling 3 cu metres round here for £140. If you buy cord in you need to wait until all the arb waste has gone. We were really busy with wholesale kindling and already booked now till October for large orders. I wish everyone luck with there ventures and hope for a cold winter.

On the news yesterday it's going up to €1.70 cent this week coming in Dublin. bike and trailer for me, leaving the chipper at home.

Might not benefit everyone, but i run my 200tdi on 60-40 veg oil.Veg is about a quid a litre from cash and carry.Those with a business can get an account right?I buy 40 litres at a time and you get points to boot.Whats not to like.

It doesnt like straight veg as its thicker than diesel, hence the need for a mixture.If you look, diesel adverts say a percentage of veg oil or `eco`.

The rules say you can use up to 2500 litres of veg a year without keeping records.

I certainly see the difference.
