This is what happened to me a couple of weeks before christmas, quoted to crown reduce 2x silver birches, got the job, carried out the work with secateurs & silkys, customer came home from lunch when i was chipping/raking up, She wasn't happy, but i was well chuffed with the end result, that isn't 25% she says, oh but i think it is, she then came out with a photo of the trees & then drew a line across indicating where she thought 25% was, you cannot do that to these trees i say you will almost certainly kill them & could even de-value your house you're trying to sell but she wouldn't have it. i explained to her everything i know about prunning but she wouldn't budge, i even offered to fell them for her for the same price as an alternative but NO she says, they're my trees & this is what i want, either you do this or i'll get someone else who will, so i must admit, i did it, i almost certainly sent the lady of the woods to an early grave, but i have a family who needs me to look after them, i have been climbing over 15 yrs & the customer usually gets what they want, reguardless of best practices.

tbh Glen that isnt the customers fault, that should of been covered before worked commenced. She had a picture in her head and it was diferent from yours, learn from it. I know i nearly had to redo 50 trees because the line of sight from me at 6 feet tall compared to the wee old lady at about 4 foot 10 over 100m away meant i needed to take about 4 feet off. Luckily she opted for the fells.

The only way to improve the situation is to make sure you carry out your work correctly up to BS3998 standard, and that when you're asked to do something you're not happy doing that you can easily convince the customer, or are able to afford to walk away from the job.

Good luck with that....have you read the new BS3998?

If we want to always bide by the rules we will all have to take a DBH tape and calculator up the tree to work out how many branches of a certain diameter we can remove:biggrin:
