Been having some trouble with my left thumb lately, rally painfull in the cold, and limited movement after doing some work on an over grown hawthorn hedge, thorn tip popped out today with loads of green mess and cursing from me, why do these little blighters cause so much trouble ?? hoping in a few days the pain will die down a bit and get some movement back in my thumb.

any similar experiences?

Yep, sea Buckthorn not Hawthorn though. Felt it go in but couldn't get it out. Was out at Gibraltar Point so couldn't go to the kwaks to get it dug out. Anyway, sat about doing naff all one night and was clenching and unclenching my fist and out it popped along with a load of green gooey stuff. Instant pain relief.

get an anti biotic and some anti histamen asap. Hawthorn releases histamen into your blood stream. If the thorn goes septic you can get septosemia. I nearly lost a finger by leaving it too long and trying to dig it out with a knife, macho tree cutter and all that.

Sounds like your body has done its job but i wouldnt take a chance with it. I fell against a hawthorn tree last year and a spike went in one side of my finger and out the other, 2" long, my hand was stuck tot he tree. Once i got it off i could feel my hand throbbing instantly, so off i poped to the doctors that day.

Quite a few years ago I had a blackthorn ram itself into the hip joint. It was so painfull for quite some time. I went to the docs after a little while as i could barely bear to walk, and they were reluctant to dig it out in case they damaged the muscles and tendons in that area. Its still there now, but apparently the body calcifies the thorn which isolates it from the system and prevents it causing harm. It still causes discomfort if I bang the hip, but otherwise its not a problem.

I've had a blackthorn under my thumbnail for about 6 years, it slid right under there while doing something at college, I forget what. Nearly in the white bit at the bottom, so I didn't fancy digging it out just left it to grow out on it's own with the nail! 6 years later it hasn't budged, I reckon if it was going to cause a problem it would have done by now...

i got something in my thumb when i was a young nipper and it went the wrong way and green, my dad put me into some sort of wrestlers hold so that i couldnt move and then scrubbed it with the scrubbing brush until it was bleeding :confused1: it made it better , and i never told him of any illnesses since
