Defender battery?

I would look on X-eng High Performance Off-Road Engineering and see their batteries there. if in doubt e mail the owner simon r and ask for his advice. excellent guy to deal with.

 

They supply the one I mention but add about 30 quid on!

A mechanically minded mate has just checked the battery levels after I have run about in it for a couple of hours and they are holding a charge.

He did notice though that the starter motor doesn't kick in every time you attempt to turn the engine over so he thinks there may possible be a loose connection or even an alternator problem.

When I bought the truck the diesel fuel regulator had a very small leak which has now been replaced.

Do you guys know if a small but continual dripping of diesel onto the starter motor may be a factor in this problem?

It can do yes, it will wet the carbon brushes which will then leave a black sludgey mess on the comm and a bad contact will result and also the brushes will stick

 

However, I suspect it may be your solonoid, mine is doing exactly the same at the moment.

Yes - The diesel will combine with dust to form a slurry which will prevent the solanoid from sending current to the starter motor.

No- your fuel regutators on the rear of the block, when it leaks it runs down the other side of the engine

If the starter motor is clogged up can it be cleaned out or is it a replacement job?

it can usually be overhauled, i pay £40 for mine to come back rebuilt and painted, there should be someone who can do it locally for you.

Got 2 optima yellow tops on a split charge in my 90 never had any probs with them.

 

starters can be cleaned and repaired, not something ive ever done, there are company’s who will do it for you at a cost, personally if your budget allow get a new/recon one, and then fix the one you’ve taken out, minimizing the amount of time the landys off the road and gaining a spare starter.

If it just doesn't engage on the flywheel, ie it either grinds or just spins without doing anything it's the solenoid rather than the motor itself (persuming it's the type with a solenoid on the side) these are replaceable on there own.

Its none of the above. the starters are almost water proof ( for wadeing ) The

Td5 starter contacts fail prematurely. Very common fault you probably all need the kit on ebay for £6 . I did mine recently easy fix but one of the bolts is an absolute pig. I did mine in situ without removing the starter.
