Firstly, respect due, anyone that walks away rather than do the wrong job is a top class arborist in my view so big up.

I will say this though, there are times when we know if we dont do the job they want somone else is going to do it, and lets face it, if WE do it rather than the lop and top brigade at least the damge wil be minimised i.e diysfunction, and in the future as apposed to having it felled it becomes a pollard, in time of great ecological value.

we have to balance what is right with what is wanted demanded and going to keep us in business and THEM out competed due to our more sympathetic approach ( cos we see the ecological significance of such a job) and better approach to delivery and service.

Thanks for the big up Hamadryad, but I in no way consider myself to be a top class arborist! I do aspire to be a decent one, but am some way off yet! This site has helped enormously. The reason I walk away is part moral, but definately part business! Making trees die is not good advertising!

I used to quote Shigo when I was trying to talk to the 'more light in my garden' brigade.

"Topping big trees is NOT pollarding, it is a crime against nature".

I have pollarded plenty in the past (loads of pops down here), but customers seem to go deaf when I mention a cycle of regular re-pollarding...

We can only keep trying....

I am probably going to get gunned down for this but i have always thought that and lets face it the TPO system needs a re shuffle! that ALL trees should be TPO, all trees should require consent for action. This way an oportunity arises to control what gets done, whos doing it and more importantly, the education of the public occurs.

Or at least some level of notification- maybe a 'graded' TPO system, whereby permission/ intention is necessary for every tree. A PITA really, but for example keeping the TPO et up as it is at the mo, but bring all trees that would normally have no constraints at least require notice of intention to be submitted, that way at least there would be some consideration before said works are carried out.

If you get what i mean:001_smile:

I think a better idea would be to have replacement orders on every tree, whereby if it didn't have a TPO you could fell it but you have to plant 5 trees in its place, preferably at a ratio of 2 native and 3 super fast growing one like gum, leylandii etc :laugh1:

That'd keep us in supply

We will have a serious gap in the age pool of Trees, that will end with bio-diversity being the eliment that suffers.

There are not enough middle aged indiginousTrees around to take the place of Vets that are sanitised on safety grounds.

Decline in decay = decline in bugs = decline in little birdies = decline in birds of prey, etc......that cycle is but a small chunk of the whole picture.

It may not effect Joe Arb who is in it to pay the bills, but the cummulative effect of that Army dessimates a big chunk of our ecological heritage
