Treework is also different in Japan, I find it odd that across the pond it is perfectly acceptable to cut down a large beautiful tree to make way for a house extension.

I am like Steve, I would rather fell and replant, but hey, such is life.

Some of the oldest Oak trees in this country are former Pollard's.

Ya'll DO a lot of topping, for sure.

That pic of the Lime was a pollard, the only problem is, when it was decided that the tree was going to be a pollarded tree they just hacked some limbs off without giving thought to the structure of the tree....so its not a real pollard.

Its what passes for a 'pollard' in the UK, but to me its topping, I detest doing these jobs, tried to tell the people to do a light crown thin and reduction or remove and re-plant, they said no, they wanted it pollarded.

Dang Tock, if it was previously topped, what do you call that second go? Definitely not arboriculture to me. That's just harsh.

very standard practice in europe is pollarding limes.......i dont really have a problem with it,hell evan if you reduce the by 5% you still get a dormant bud expolosion! its just the way a lot are managed and always have been if its certain other species its pretty crimanal though.

Nice pics blinky
