Trying to get Public Liability Insurance, Your Views?

Hi all,

I'm just in the process of sorting out my insurance & have narrowed it down to Lycetts & ArbInsure.

 

Lycetts (chap called Daniel Wyld & very very helpful) cover the tree work & equip ok but have a higher excess of £500 for smaller equip.

 

ArbInsure (lady called Debbie) as above with an excess of £100 for smaller stuff but will also cover me for snow clearance & gritting. Slightly cheaper too.

 

The problem I have is ArbInsure won't give me a policy wording for the snow work or tree work till I take out the policy. Am I being unreasonable asking to see exactly what I'm covered for before I commit or is this normal & how the industry works?

They say they'll cover me for the snow clearing ok but as they've never been asked they have no details, just that I'm covered...

 

Any help or previous experience would be much appreciated.

Danny, sorry I can't answer your question directly, but just wanted to make you aware that if you decide to accept a policy with either company, you have BY LAW the right to cancel said policy and get a full refund if you are not happy with the wording. Its called the cooling off period, think its about 7 days.

 

That said I do think its a bit of a liberty of any insurance company to sell a policy without clarifying what its covers, but in retrospect I can't think of any insurance I've bought in the past where I got to see the "small print" bumph before I had actually comitted to buying a policy. So it's probably industry standard and hence the reason why the cooling off period is mandatory as a regulatory control measure.

Thanks mate,

I figured there would be a 7 or 14 day cooling off period. I was just trying to figure out if it was me expecting too much or if the broker couldn't be bothered...

She did ring me since & again said they don't have a standard wording but this would be tailored & sent to me along with a certificate once I have a policy with them.

yes you are defiantly entitled to see the policy wording/document before buying. If they refuse, have they got something to hide? Just walk away and go with someone else. Most people don't get to see the policy wording before buying because they don't ask for it. With tree insurance you need to go through your policy document with a tooth pick. They can have lots of loop holes.
