I wonder if the authors have tried all those woods, I burn Sweet Chestnut often and it burns a treat. I have a closed stove, but have found that if the wood is split down the middle and then well seasoned it doesn't spit much anyway.

 

I also leaves hardly any ash.

According to the AIE holly is grade 3 and you can burn it green, the green holly in my yard (cut 2 days ago) weighs as much as hornbeam, never tried it but surely it dont burn green, only one way to find out.

 

 

I've been brought up on 'ash and holly are the two woods you can burn green'. Doesn't mean it's a good idea, just that you can do it.

Still find it hard to believe you can burn holly green, but you obviously know what your talking about. you live & learn

Pleasantly surprised how well a bit of 2 year old poplar burnt on my open fire. Might take the digger and drop and stack a few dozen trees that we left last year cause we didn't think it would be any good.

 

I`m doing another test burn on some poplar that I have got down to about 15% and it definitely warrants a :thumbup:
