I had real trouble trusting the gear be it a loop/knot you tie yourself or a mechanical device, id sit and watch it convinced it was gonna slip, The first time i worked in a tree instead of just climb one i was miles better, Thinking about the work took my mind off the knots.

The best thing for my confidence i found was falling (only a couple of feet), i had to go up a willow, got to a certain point and theres nothin there, nothing to hold onto at al, I had to jump up and grab a branch to progress, so i pluck up the courage and jump, i missed and fell 3or4 feet, didnt hurt myself at all BUT after that i realised the gear works

Ah yes, I remember that one! The three of us sat on a log watching you fall off and laughing until our sides hurt!

Yup thats the one mate, A few choice remarks were said quietly to myself about the laughing, Im just glad you tied that knew knot i was trying properly Pete

Definately spikes. Not having an anchor point for reassurance made my legs shake the first few times.

Found my self stamping them in as hard as i could thinking that this would stop me falling only to find that if i missed my spot my spike would slip harder. By the time I was halfway up a pole I was too fatigued to carry on.

Now I gently place the spikes where I want them and find this both quicker and less work. Still got a way to go before I'm up to scratch though.
