personally the one i would like to make harder is 41 dismantling

It really does not cover enough and no rope knowledge or shock loading and not even knowing how to set up a capstan

although i totally agree if they were harder we may be seen as a more professional industry with fewer nuppets

The Big change i would like to see in the industry is we are advised to do updates every five yrs which rarely happens.

If the Update was also an advanced and cave you a 2nd level and 5 yrs later a level 3 ect folk may advance more and experience would actually be respected and earn't

This is exactly my thoughts. Thank you Bob.

My thoughts are that the NPTC certs give you a provisional license and then your employer will give you the apprentiship, teaching you the why's and wherefores.

However the current system allows a landscaper to do 3 weeks training and then add "tree surgery" to their sign writing. Enabling them to be fully insured aswell.

I'm not bothered about loosing jobs to gardeners, I'm not even bothered about having tickets or not. This thread was a talking point for whoever was interested. Not necessarily my true beliefs.

So would you have them retested every 6 months Frank????

As if they did not climb for 6 months after passing they would soon no longer be up to speed.

I say let the commercial pressures police us, the weak soon fail.

I wouldn't retest anyone. I'm not an examiner. This thread was not supposed to be about what Frank thinks or has said. It wasn't supposed to be personal. Just a generalisation of industry practises and what people thought of them.

Must be great being perfect and never making any mistakes :001_rolleyes:

The guy was at collage, learning these things!!!

I think its good it happened, I bet no one who was there at the time has ever done it since.

im the first to say im not perfect. thats why i try very hard to make the effort to learn and practice what i learn.

its not possible to do every single little thing properly by the book every time. the difference is how these things are aproached, handled and reflected on.

many things that are being taught are rushed, and are not allowed to sink in. so things very easily get missed.

that was good of you to do that.

did the person get a ticking off? or was it a role play?

this situation is what we mean by adequate training. your ropes (main and secondary) should always be attached to your harness, ie- unclip the bowline/splice and throw over next anchorpoint whilst keeping the friction hitch end clipped to the harness.

yes the person got a right telling off from the teacher and it was not role play was 100% real, the person i rescued took his prussik of his rope and threw the rope over the branch which he failed to do and his rope fell out the tree.

I am interested, i have posted, i am bothered, so do i not qualify as a worthy debater for a thread you started and are not bothered about? :sneaky2:

What a fantastic idea Bob. That answer was morethe reason I started his thread. Throw some ideas around. Brainstorm.

Not, "why do you think that Frank", or "that's silly frank"

When i first started i was put straight up a tree to section, i had only ever played in trees with my harness. The groundies were all experienced guys who knew i was a nervous wreck, the second i put the pulling line on they all got it and pulled it to try and get me to slip and all thought it was hilarious, i was bricking it but i hung on and got on with the job. After about a week of climbing easy skinny pops i was put straight into a 100 foot pls pine to limb on a traffic lit main rd with all the head of council watching, my boss didnt have enough kit for 2 climbers, so i opted for spikes rather than a climbing line, so i wasnt aloud to slip or run out of fuel. It was the most terifying day of my life but i pulled it off and got all the respect of the guys on the team and praised by all the watchers, it felt amazing being called a Lumberjack. That is real tree work, glossy mags and pictures dont show you that part of it. I have dropped stuff out the tree, i have climbed up and forgot my landyard but had to carry on in fear of getting slagged by the crew, you have to just suck it up and get on with it or go home. The ones that dont fall out the tree get the job, simples:001_smile: Thats why most employers i know dont give tickets a second thought, i know i dont
