Ask a silly question!

You can also get plastic caps that will fit over the nut when youve cut them to size like suggested above (also a good tip about threading the nut of first, I do the same:thumbup1:)

If they need to be really flush then you would need to use dome headed coach bolts but they can be a lot more hassle to fit plus they would but upside down and you would loose the benefits that Skyhuck mentioned earlier on.

My stupid question is and I am quite ashamed of asking to be honest. How do you measure the DBH of a tree and what is a trees 'girth'? This is probably something you learn right at the beginning but the beginning was a long time ago!

Skyhuck has already answered but I would add that the best way to accurately measure the DBH is with a DBH tape - a normal tape will give you the circumference but if you put a DBH tape around a stem it will tell you the average diameter.

You can either buy a diamiter tape that is calibrated to give you the diamiter when measuring the circumference or measure the circumference (girth), if you divide the circumference by 3.14 you get the diameter.

Going back to the bolting the box down, you could use gutter bolts facing upwards with a nylock nut to hold it in place, and put silicone under the head of the bolt before you tighten it up, ensuring no leaks and helping to hold it all too.

Could you not get/ make a couple of roof bars on which to mount it thus avoiding the problem and saving the cab roof?
