business owners - how many weeks/months/years did it take before you found 4 or 5 days of work each week?

and what method of advertising was most effective when starting out?

I started by mixing subby climbing in with my own private work, so always worked full time.

 

I just cut back on the subbing as I got more of my own work, until I was no longer doing any subbing.

 

The very best advertising is a job well done and a happy customer, most weeks I get 2 or 3 inquires from old customers or people they have recommended me too.

I probably did the same as Skyhuck in all intense and purpose.

 

I whittled down working as a subbie(ahem) from 5 days a week to 3 then to 2 then to all my own work.

 

That was prob about 8 years ago but tbh I dont have 5 days a week full time, more like 4 if at very best.

 

 

I would hazard at a guess that it would take at least 5 years on your own to hold your own, but obviously depends on you and the work available in your working area.

Given the choice would you work in one area or be free to move around the country? As in having a central location then subbing to other areas of the uk working away a week or two at a time?

Tbh working away isnt my bag baby:001_smile: But, if that is your thing and you are a good climber then I dont doubt that you can and will find work at a good rate.

 

Big/good contracts do come and go but imo you have to move with them, it is more difficult to be productive in one area but thats the way I prefer it, I could definitely make more coin by subbing and moving but its not something I like to do.

local work is nice but we get a good amount of work all over, this year we have been sent to wales as well as sutton coldfield and other places, at first i felt like i was treading on local arbs toes but soon make new friends and contacts, garden centres love free chip and no firewood yard will turn away free wood. just price it right etc, change of scenery is usually welcomed by the lads. my turn for stupid question then.. i got this box to fit on cab roof, do i put the bolts through going up? or down? and why?

I think it could be good if work in the local area was quiet, but if you were away you might lose the trust of regular customers? As for the box I have no idea, but Jenny (Klaymeb) says gaffa tape
