tree climb comp practice.

So there i was on holiday, climbing around a tree, looking around and thought it would be a nice tree to do some practice competition climbing in, so i decided to set up some targets in the tree. I didnt have much of a clue about comp climbing, apart from what i've seen, and that is you go around to specified targets, strop in, shout clear, and hit the target/bell. then move onto the next.:confused1:

So i came down, looked around for something i could use as targets, found some plastic flower pots. Thought great, that will do. put some string on 5 of them. Went straight back up the tree. found 5 spots for them.

Got to the top, started the stopwatch, and away i go. First run was just under 10mins . Which i was well happy about, thought it was gunna be more like 15-20mins.

Think i might invest in some proper bells, etc for that tree next time im out there. Anyone know a good place for some cheap bells?

Anyway, here are a few pics. and before anyone mentions, there wasn't a good photo of me at target 3, that's why it skips from 2 to 4. Enjoy.

  1. The tree and me
  2. At the 1st Target
  3. At the 2nd Target
  4. At the 4th Target
  5. Swinging out to the 5th Target
  6. At the 5th Target
  7. At the bottom after the climb. lol

We used to use a big beech at westonbirt that had been used for the workclimb in the European comp of 2003? I think thats right. All you need is some tape at each target (or flowerpots ) its up to you to know that you reached them properly, no point in putting bells up.

Usual time allowed for a workclimb is 5 minutes for a big tree and maybe 7minutes for a massive one. 10 minutes on you first go is v.good though!!

Those targets all look a bit easy to get to. Shouldn't they be right out on the ends?

Forgive me if i'm wrong, I know absolutely nothing about climbings comps. Just when i've set up targets to teach other climbers, i've put them much further out.:thumbup1:

Barrier tape works really well for visibility but my students like the satisfaction of the bell ringing... No jokes needed... The cheapest bells I’ve found are from pet shops – parrot bells. You get some funny looks when you buy half a dozen at a time though!
