winch assisted felling

Had a nasty Willow with a lot of decay in the lower stem to fell next to a pond, so we shot a line into the top and got a winch on on it. As I started the first cut of the felling cut, it started going back over...good job we had the winch on it or I would have been up to my nuts in pond-water:001_smile:. Only got 3 inches of the back cut in before it went over!

Just a thought, with the winch line anchored high up, if it put any real load onto the vehicle it could well lift the front wheels. Chocks on the back wheels would more effective imo.

As Peter says, but i would just add, to avoid the steep angle it would have been better witht he truck further away.

 

I personally would have backed upto the trees in the background and anchored a sling around one of them and fastened it onto the towbar.

one more tip which you probably know, with the transmission handbrake on that vehicle if you lift a wheel you have no brake, so remember to diff lock before winching.

Hi Moley. I was up at Collins Copse finishing up ready for the deer fencing last week. Got one more day up there tomorrow with Will on the digger to shift the last bits of brash and get the remaining timber ride-side for removal. Hope you two guys are well
