chainsaw protection jackets?

I see lots of pics of tree workers with what we call full PPE, eg chainsaw protection boots , gloves , trousers, helmets , muffs. and a t-shirt! what happened to the chainsaw protection jacket? surely without that it's not full PPE? I know you build up a sweat when working with trees, but you can have a shower when you get home, what you can't do is stick your arm back on with a bit of araldite!

am I being too black and white or is it just impractical to wear the jacket?

IMO, it can do more harm than good, in summer its not just a little bit of sweat you get dehydrated quicker. The weight of them tires you quick. I think its safer without it. I think you can get protection just for your arms, but surely you would have to be doing something seriously wrong to cut your arm.

i was told that for experienced and qualified operators, chainsaw protective gloves were going to soon be optional. I dont climb with a saw as yet so its not so much an issue for me, but i have a pair of the non-ppe timberland pro gloves and one pair with the protection in them. the protected ones are the comfiest ppe gloves ive worn, but the non-ppe extra grip models are a joy to climb in

I hope so, my boss is Mr Health and Safety and makes it hard work re PPE. Worst of it is he still thinks it's the 1990's and won't accept things have moved on in the Timber industry

I don't climb at all (still a hairy ar*ed woodman at the mo) but hopefully gonna do something about that in the near future :icon14:
