someone else said that, maybe oak would not start or keep a fire going unless it was mixed with ash or something else?

I wonder if their is a market for selling oak firewood as a premium product? maximum heat, low ash content and slow burning. might be able to charge that bit extra? At least customers would know what they are getting?

and there was me moaning that i was working indoors when i wanted to be outside doing tree work. I forgot about wearing chainsaw boots and hyflex trousers!

CS30 and 31 done (kensey training,top marks good course), now do i do the cs32 and 34 medium trees and windblown, or basic tree climb and cs39 use of chainsaw from rope and harness? would like to get both but can only do one in the next couple of months, which is better work wise?

cor blimney guvenor... thought as much steve, whereas my dad and grandad picked up the yellow pages it seems people increasingly get straight on the net these days, but even your answer surprised me! -
Any of you peep's out have websites and if you do any idea if they actually lead to any phonecalls of the type - "hi, I saw your website can you come around and give me a quote?" or is it yellow pages , local paper ads, and word of mouth that generates all the work?

I see lots of pics of tree workers with what we call full PPE, eg chainsaw protection boots , gloves , trousers, helmets , muffs. and a t-shirt! what happened to the chainsaw protection jacket? surely without that it's not full PPE? I know you build up a sweat when working with trees, but you can have a shower when you get home, what you can't do is stick your arm back on with a bit of araldite! am I being too black and white or is it just impractical to wear the jacket?

I'm not even sure that is the final figure as the NPTC assessment is £220 approx + VAT? so it could be nearer £900:scared:

I have just been offered a place on the cs30/31 course at kingswood at the end of the month and was expecting to pay around £500 ish. that's what's on their website so i thought ok? I got their invoice and it seems that the course with assessment is £875! inc vat Is this the normal price everyone charges?

I'm hoping to go the other way, it's not all above money believe me, just spent 5 and a half hours in the car today travelling to and from work then spent 8 hours on a building site with 300 bosnians for £120 (less £30 diesel costs). Is it worth it? you decide... I already have.

yes bill i just put the diesel in first (25litres normally) then nip next door to Lidl for my 25litres of veg oil 49p per litre and it just goes straight in the tank to be mixed with the diesel. start her up and away you go. the veg oil and diesel will mix nicely as you trundle up the road. you cant just run veg oil 100% it's viscosity is too thick to go through the pump and injectors and clogs them up, hence lowering it's viscosity by mixing it with diesel. you cant do it on the newer common rail hilux diesels as they have very fine injectors it clogs up straight away. seems to run better too. but you must change the fuel filter every 5000miles and lower the mix in winter (eg70% diesel - 30% veg) works for me anyway.

great info, especially about the mortgage stuff, now looking to buy a couple of acres of wood ( i presume i can built some type of temporary structure to keep the wood dry?)

Just met the farmer who showed me a barn (i reckon it was 10m X 7m) I said it would be great for storing firewood (no electric or security eg.no door) but it had 3 sides and a kent peg roof. Balked slightly when he mentioned the rent he wanted.. £10 per square meter per quarter, on my sums that works out as 70 sq meters @ £10= £700 per quarter or £2800 per year!( i think i worked that out right?) bit steep or is it me? It would be cheaper for me to buy a couple of acres of woodland wouldn't it?

50% veg oil 50% diesel equates to about 80p per litre overall . thats why i can afford to run the hilux!

Just went into sainsbugs to hand over some money to the taxman ( fill up with diesel) and saw they were selling bags of firewood (£3.50 for a small bag of green netting) had my moisture meter on me as you do?! moisture content read 38%! how can you burn that! thought my meter was playing up so read all of them and 37% was the lowest. not only is the wood expensive but they haven't even attempted to dry it out!

Thought about that as it's fiberglass but if you look at it its quite solid and curves over at the top , so if you cut it open just inside the curve it will give the 3 sides some ridgidity??!!@ I will do it and post some pics, if it goes wrong it's only a mistake that cost's me a tenner.
