Those limes are so far gone, no point arguing, fell em grind, em and replant with something less prone to Kretzschmaria duesta maybe a nice fastigiate oak quercus fastigiata "the cypress Oak or for something smaller an ornamental cherry, P. 'Taoyame' or if the shallow roots of cherries are to be avoided in the drive and lawn Ermans birch Betula 'Ermanii' with its stunning white bark and slender habit, though multiple stemmed forms can be got which captilise on the white trunks

will this fungus stay in the ground and can i do anything to try and prevent the others getting it?

 

Other than Honey Fungus, I think the general consensus is that most fungi are in the environment all the time and only affects weakened trees.

 

You said the trees had been put under great stress on all fronts.
