Owls nest.

Picture the scene, you're working in a protected woodland, you have a dead tree to fell, while making preparations you notice from a cavity in the tree a Owl fly out.

 

What would you do?

back away and leave the tree unless its a major hazard to a property or people.

 

There is a good chance the owl will already be sitting on eggs as they nest early.

 

If the tree needs to be felled ASAP then i would seek advice from the local Natural England office, about getting dispensation to carry out the work as its NE who enforce wildlife and countryside act legislation.

Not much meat on an owl MB, you would need some capercallie and a golden eagle too to get a decent lunch.

I would leave the tree as well, Unless there was a real danger to anybody, Best off doing things correctly when it comes to nesting birds plus i think owls are awsome.

Contact the client, assess the Heath and safety implacations of the tree work, perhaps fence of the danger area until owl has felged and moved on, then reduce the tree to a safe standing stem, leaving the nest site (unlightly to be higher in the tree than 8-10m) where possible and or erecting an Owl box.
