Chestnut Pollards, Worcester.

John - Great work on the re-pollards, and great photos too. A few years ago I visited Brussells (they have many, of their avenues lined with pollarded trees) And they seem to pollard as a matter of course out there as the re-growth showed that they obviously planned their works over the right period of time.

Nice work john. I am a big fan of pollarding as a way of managing urban trees. The french and germans have been doing it for hundreds of years - I'll dig out some pics of the huge Acer pollards i took in Annecy, france.

Ed, on your way to the Grand Massifs do you go along the south coast/shore of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) ? There are some stunning re-pollarded trees, mostly mature planes. They look fantastic when managed correctly. I have always wondered if they actually paint the trunks of the trees or just have coloured underlighting as they often appear blue ish in colour. I was once informed that this was known as a European pollard - i.e. removing all leaders and central stem to create the wide growth pattern. Can any one confirm this?

Hello my little Chestnut thread! Long-time, no-see…

Looks lovely David, thanks for posting.

Got a story to tell about my beloved Chestnuts – The riverside was recently cleared of Alders by a local (ish) company, some obviously went the wrong way and some of the heads have been snapped off – Not Good!!
