What is the worst wood

i was told not to burn elder in a house as it has a gypsie curse with it..... dont know if its true as i never burn it inside. anyone else heard this?

Well it was well dead standing and has been drying for a few months, I'll put a moisture meter on it and check, but I'm not that happy with it at the moment.

I think because alder grows next to river/streams/wet stuff its got more moisture than most wood so takes longer to dry out. Think that is correct. Ive found seasoned alder great wood.

I find that alder drys really fast once split, and when dry is excellent firewood. Would have tons for my woodburner if i could get hold of it:thumbup1:

I love a bit of nice dry pop on the woodburner, burns hot quick and clean, gets the house toasty in no time.

My Head Forester once upon a time wouldn't have elm in his house. He reckoned there was an old saying that "Elm hateth and waiteth" - though I don't know if that was more to do with dead ones chucking branches off - maybe someone had one land on them once upon a time? I used to burn tonnes of the stuff though - no ill effects so far!

 

Never heard the elder story - though it's mentioned in the firewood poem - "make a fire of elder tree, death within your house will be"

Never underestimate the power of Gypsy spells. Haven't you seen that trick they do, where they use a sprig of 'lucky heather' to magically replace a valid tax disc?
