Roots lifting path

Got asked by a client about best advice on what to do and i thought i was ask what you would all do.

Got a popular growing ( grey) next to a fence, however there is a public footpath ( very busy one of course) on the other side and the roots are lifting it up. It is block paving ( ie bricks).

I cant remove a few bricks and chop out and small roots as its 1-2 foot max from the base so obviously they are not small roots.

Its quite a decent sized tree ( trunk about 3-4 f), i have not checked yet to c if its protected. The client is a a housing association and so is terrified about being sued and also about having to shell out any money.

What would you do/ advise in this situation?

Many thanks

Jose

Hi Jose,

May have lost th thread a little but if you're considering felling, after TPO consents etc., I'd serioulsy consider trying to poison/kill the tree off first to prevent the prolifc regrowth that will undoubtedly occur, and probably still will but hoepfully manageable.

Just athought...

Definately poison the stump. Even the lateral roots left from grinding will regen, probably right through the path...

If it is protected, give this as the reason for your application to fell/poison/grind/replant replacement in better location. Causing damage to third party property is a fairly good reason to consent to felling.

Got a job just like this starting on the 22nd March, 2 Ash trees lifting the pavement and owner was notified by highways to deal with them or they would and bill him. To add to the dilema both trees have 3 phase LV lines going through them so I've got a shutdown of electricity on the monday with traffic lights blocking one side of the road, we will dismantle both trees that day, leaving all the debris to be dealt with the next day as time is money with the electricity off. then day 2 burn all the arisings leaving any logs for client. Day 3 will be grind out stumps, apply glyphosate and then the highway boys will relay the path. If it all comes off to plan then day 4 will be in pub!

In your case if it's housing association then just tell the guy to ring them, it is not his responsibility or call yourself offering your services to maintain all their treestock!
