It has always confused me that with more automation, computers, robots, faster cars and tractors, all this tech, that we need to retire at 70 and not let the machines take over, retire at 50.

Remember that automation started around 200 years ago.  Far less time globally is taken up with providing food and shelter than it was then.  But our expectations have evolved.

You might think that car manufacturing (as an example) would employ less people due to robots and automation.  Wrong.  More people work in car manufacture today than in 1960.  Our needs and expectations have changed.

We don’t yet know how things will evolve due to AI; but the fact that millions of jobs will be lost does not mean there will be millions unemployed!

Glad I’ll be dead, or as good as.

What is the point of life without work? What are we going to do all day, arts and crafts? Talk to the wife or some other fate worse than death.

No harm in it for 10/15 years at the end when you’re old, but your whole life?

You are what you do, you go to some sort of social gathering and as soon as you meet another bloke you find out what he does so you can judge him.
