Generally if it is a regular work on school grounds then you need to get checked out. I'd be assuming that that the school staff are not going to be directly supervising you, leaving you to get on with it. If it is emergency work then not sure, and not so sure if it is a one off survey.

Out of term time where there is no contact with the pupils you should be OK (but remembering there could be holiday clubs using the full school grounds).

You should be able to do a single DBS to cover a county rather than for each individual school (however private schools will generally want 1 each for regular work).

That's the rule of thumb I would go with, however the rules for each area might be different.

I'm not DBS checked, very rarely asked about it, and I don't often do work for schools. I did a day in a school a while back, the caretaker accompanied for the day, that was emergency works though

If working on school grounds (outside), either remedial work or tree surveying,  what's the consensus about the need for a DBS either in term time or during school hols?

Depends on the school. One school I go to every contractor has to have an enhanced DBS. If you don't no work. Blanket policy. Some places they you have a minder.

If you need an enhanced DBS the school have to do it for you. It costs them rather a lot 250 quid I think. Once it's through you can sign up to the update service and it keeps it up to date for 38 quid a year. I do this so they can just check me if they need.

Way I see it if the staff need checking the contractor do too. You just charge accordingly don't you.

I did work at a private school up to about 4 years ago. They started saying, needed Risk assessments method statements insurance copy and DBS cheque, Told them to find someone else as had worked for them for about 30 plus years and was the person how had worked there the longest. School closed last year so no loss, and very little work ha been do there since I stopped.
