I'm guessing your listed on the tip site thing on here, also have a look at Greenline Arb app. Similar sort of thing and seems to work for people I've spoken to in south of the country

Morning All,

not posted for a while. We use around 300 tons of arb waste a year for personal use at home. in the past we have collected it with out too much trouble but it seems there has been a lull recently.

i know there is plenty of demand for decent cord wood that can go through a processor but is there much demand for knottie trunks, awkward shapes and general big arse bits that need 5 guys to lift and can't be easily split? We are not in the least bit fussy on what we take in, can be any shape size or species.

ideally i would make contact with some local lads who have a yard and once they have enough for an artic load, one can be organised.

where do folk get rid of that 'tricky pile' in the corner of their yard? The Log Goblins only seem to like the bits which can go straight in their log boiler! I am at the other end of the scale from them focusing on the WATSE part of arb waste!

based in Oxfordshire, a few minutes from the M40 so great access.

any help or suggestion welcome.

PLEASE NOTE, AS PER MY AD, I AM EXPECTING TO PAY SOMETHING FOR ARB WASTE!

It won't happen, as Didcot gobbles all green waste, including sweepings, chunks of logs and woodchip and because they won't have to pay haulage they'll pay alot more for everything that you won't take. That's how it is there. It's absolutely silly....

who are these people!? they pay to take stuff in?

the only thing i wont take is brash (just chip it first) or soil.

i thought roots and big awkward lumps craned down are the most tricky to get rid off?

speaking to the lads who i see here, they all say they get paid to take the stuff down and unless its decent straight bits, just want to dump it as quick as possible and get on to the next job.

is this now different then?

That must only be for pee wee outfits.

There is and always has been a value albeit small in the timber and chip. Letting that go to waste or giving it away is not good business and never will be

i hear you, but doesn't that depend on the cost of renting the yard to store it in, having a loader to load lorries and having to deal with the haulier who says they will be with you at 8am but turn up at 1.45pm!?

the area i have allocated for storage would earn more from other uses if i didn't want the logs for myself, if that makes sense.

Either way, my inbox is still open if anyone is interested, this would be a long term thing as well.

Come now mate, you and I are not much more than pee wee outfits. Yet I still have better things to do with yard space than accumulate shite and odd size lumps in the hope of selling it for £18 per ton in a years time.

As OP says above, time and space are money. Much of my sawmill slabs go straight onto the burn pile.

@Woodwanter- if there is a sawmill local then that would be a very good place to start looking. If you can undertake to pay the going rate and clear the yard straight away of everything reject each time there's a lorry, then it would work well for both of you. It'll be everything from slabwood (lots of it!) to whole oak butts that are full of rot when they open them up.

The competitor for this market are the local chip boys with their biomass chippers behind tractors. The price of chip (underpinned by the RHI) is distorting the market. Politely, if you have RHI on this boiler, then you are already creaming it in and you may as well accept that you need to pay the going rate for the feedstocks!

thanks for some reality check here! some of the lads i talk to are running 7 or 8 gangs, have cranes and tractor PTO chippers etc. They keep the hard wood logs and chip but the crap is just a pain to them. interesting to hear other's take on this though.

thanks, i will look again for saw mills but there isn't much around here. We also have a chip tip, there isn't much value as you say selling it on if you factor in time and depreciation in running a JCB and opportunity cost of the storage space.

I am happy to pay to collect, the issue i have is cereal prices are back down to the mid 80's price point again and grain drying it costs a lot. Not your problem though granted!

I’d be looking at burning grain then! Lots of calories in it.
