Only as a pointer for potential 7.5 tonner buyers, our truck has to be laden for its pmi’s. Level loaded with chip with about 200mm to spare is 9 cubic meters and puts the gross at 7 tons with driver, so in theory half a ton spare.

For my future chip box, my calculations come out at 11m3 volume with 10/9m3 useable in reality based on a box 3.5m x 2m x 1.6m

I recently weighed a level 3m3 of conifer (thuya) and got 280kg per m3

I know hardwood with no leaf to be around 350kg/400kg

I've a conifer job in September which requires two 3.5t running overweight or one 7.5t with a legal payload.

OR... One 3.5t truck possibly running mildly overweight towing an Ifor tipper maxed out in volume but completely legal in weight.

Tip site for this job is a 90min round trip though most of my work is local so a 15/20min tip off time.

The problem with that is the whole shooting match exceeds the 3.5 ton limit which falls into olicense and tacho territory. To stay legal the answer is to run two transits with a mad busy driver on turnaround all day or get one lorry, the lorry soon starts to make more economical sense 😂

France is quite relaxed compared to the UK in that you can run a 7.5t 'van' sized truck and park it at home.

You don't need to justify your finances, have a dedicated yard or obtain an O licence.

Checks are yearly at a dedicated MOT (C.T) garage for heavy goods.

For a country so wrapped up in administrative procedure this is quite liberating and I intend to take full advantage of it.

Though the use of the tacho under 50km from base is a grey area.

Here we fall between Forestry, Agricultural and Horticulture, the three areas in which an exemption applies though no Gendarme seems able to give a give a concrete answer.

It may rest upon the businesses exact category of registration.

I'll visit my local Gendarmerie to ask.

It's not realyan issue as I'm applying for a driver's tacho card.

I have limited experience of the Canter . Not a bad truck but a bit bouncy unless a dead flat track . The 5.2 ltr Izuzu could be thirsty ?

Would 150hp be sufficient for a 7.5t?

I could get it remapped of course.

The 5.2 being 190hp...
