Screwdriver has hooked the oil pipe that comes out of the tank. Ran it like this and got some oil through the duct the bar holes lines up with. Made me think some kind of air lock problem.

Finger is pointing at an oil tank breather I think. Blew air into it. Oil blew out of the tank filler all over the bench.

When trying to get a feel for how competent a motor mechanic is, ask them what brand torque wrenches they use. When trying to get a feel for how competent a saw owner is, ask what air compressor they have.

Says the guy with the clean saw that doesn't oil.

Progress however. Found the oil pump with the help of an esteemed fellow member. It's at the other end of the black pipe the screwdriver has hooked. You thread a bit of rod (M4 I think) into it and pull it out (no slide hammering required). Cleaned and put back but no oiling still. Could be that I need to prime it. Or just replace it. At least I know where it is now.

Arbtalk's dead handy isn't it.

You know what I'd like to accompany me on this journey btw. A workshop/service manual. Stihl are refusing to give it to me because I'm not a dealer. Discouraging user fixing. Aggrieving, not to mention environmentally unsound.

If it was loose in the housing I wonder if the pump body may have rotated and the inlet and outlet become misaligned with the ports. Thinking about this the inlet to the pump does not match up to any port, it is the outlet that has to match up with the port that leads to the groove on the bar mount. The pumping action is the pump shaft oscillating very slightly up and down with each rotation.

IIRC you cannot pump  oil through it because the D shape of the pump shaft is what seals the ports as it rotates.

Ask for copy of work shop manual on Outdoor Power Equipment forum, members there go out of their way to get hold of manuals and share them….there might even be a dedicated section for the purpose, can’t remember.  Elec saw might be a challenge but if you don’t ask you don’t get.

Ill find a workshop manual and send it to you. Those pumps need to be inserted quite specifically or they wont work. The pump needs to be set to the right depth and it needs to be facing a certain way. If I get a saw in with those pumps and the pipe or filter isn't blocked I just replace the pump, its not worth cleaning it and putting it back in as it never works.
