Feck my old boots! I've got an excellent pair of hiking boots that are 5+ years old, they need resoling, but not at a cost of £75, am I that far out of touch?

Sad times we live in.

Even getting rsoled costs about a oner these days.

Best part of a oner! Brand spanking new pair for £160, how's that work? So the leather upper is less than the sole? Explain that to Mr...

You are paying for someone's time, not the product. The shoes are put together for pennies by children living in a slum. They are resoled by an adult professional with a mortgage.

Sad times indeed. It's a shit throwaway society we live in. There is some hope maybe, with things like the Right to Repair movement gaining momentum.

A decent local cobbler is worth their weight in gold. I've had a few pairs of shoes saved from the bin on a few occasions, and the guy has only charged a pittance really. Hiking boots are probably a bit too specialised I guess, unfortunately.

OK, I'll get some new boots then.

No no, I'm not saying that.

Import some children and have them resole your boots for cheaper.

I was jesting, it makes no sense to have a new sole put on, and the other bits, gluing, stitching done, by time they are done I'll be a oner+ light, I can have a box fresh pair for £160.

I didn’t say resoled, I said rsoled!

You’re right Eggs, it doesn’t make sense, but the cobbler isn’t conning you.

It’s a skilled job.

Economies of scale when the originals are soled in a factory with thousands of other pairs.
