Aldershot home of the british army gets its name from alder and gunpowder making. I think char from alder buckthorn was the best for fuses because it was finer, I don't think you could get enough alder buckthorn for a full blown army whereas plenty of alder about.

Yeah, looks like it is both. It was definitely straight Alder that I had in mind, (I have to sheepishly admit to not even having heard of Alder Buckthorn. 😮)
