Felling tongs?

Has anybody seen/used felling tongs as in this video?

Anybody know where to get some and the pole or is it a case of modifying some timber tongs from Chris Forestry for example?

Used one in the past, it was an adapted hand tongs, with one of the pivot rivets removed an replaced with a long bolt. The bolt allowed pivot to move but would let tongs sit on top of some saw poles to let you carry/ balance it to place onto tree. It was a bit rough and ready but worked well on the occasions we used it.

Don't know the costs involved for that specific pole, but it's possible you could cobble something together quite easily out of a clipstick intended for sport climbing.

Edit:

Like this one which telescopes to 6.5m

An incredibly long clip stick - an absolute beast of a pole. It extends from 113cm to 648cm.

Google skidding tongs UK and you'll find what you need.👍

Yes, I have done that bit. I already have hand tongues that are possibly a bit small and skidding tongs which would be way too heavy. There are quite a range of sizes out there and I think the larger Husqvarna hand tongues are about the right size but not sure the arms are long enough for a spring to work.

Suck it and see I guess.

I think cobbling together is probably the way to go, not easy to figure out how strong they are from internet ads though. As well as the link you posted I have seen some designed to lift cameras up to heights, whether they are strong enough I don't know until I try I guess.

I've seen ads for various size aluminium poles that will slot together but no ads for the locking connectors unfortunately.

Might sound daft to some of you guys but there is no way I could climb up there as I am completely hopeless with heights no matter how I try.

Doesn't sound daft at all. Different people have different skillsets, and need to plan accordingly. I can't fly a plane, play the guitar, lactate... I could continue.

Never used a set of felling tongs but I have seen them out in Finland.  If you want to get a rope up in a tree for pulling you can use a swifty (not the Taylor fan type). It's designed for docking boats and you attach the rope to it and push the thing into a branch and pull down and it drops the rope over. Then base tie it.

Most skidding/mini digger tongs will be too heavy for making a set. Minimum pull height for assisting felling is 2.2m so you don't have to go too high. Although pulling power and back lean really determine pull height.
