Mini winch

There have been a few videos on French Arb pages concerning this anathema device.

Aside from vids of climbers winching themselves into trees (not heard of SRT?) there is one of a Jo-Beau M400 being winched up ramps into a truck.

All powered by a battery drill.

Interesting piece of kit but that is as far as my interest goes.

Had a go on the Husqvarna x Skylotec powered ascender at a Summer Arb competition here in France.
The sales guy was trying to impress how useful it was for getting kit in and out of the tree, lowering saws for refuelling blah, blah, he had never done a days climbing in his life.
I could see some occasional benefits, carrying up large volumes of bracing gear for instance, but how many times a year are you bracing huge tree crowns? How many times a year are you lowering 661’s up and down 150m trees for refuelling?

It could be remotely controlled from the ground, so an injured climber with a damaged line ‘may’ be able to access the device and clip on for rescue.
Best part if 5 grand too if I remember, I bought a gravel bike instead.

I'm trying to avoid climbing ever again but if that wasn't the case, I'd have a powered ascender tomorrow. £1500 for the AWAH is dirt cheap. £5000 for the Husky or any of the other bigger ones is still very cheap. On a tree of any size at all, you'll make anyone who doesn't have one look disabled or dead.

I can't believe what I'm reading. You don't want the energy of a sixteen-year-old, all day, every day for the cost of a 2018 Ford Fiesta? A few years from now, climbing without one will be as unthinkable as hipthrusting. Between now and then, anyone without one is going to be outcompeted by anyone with one.
