As far as I know there is no maximum probation period set out by HMRC (if that’s what you mean?). Guidelines suggest 3-6 months. One company I trialed with asks for 9.

Christ... big window to pot someone off then

Yes, but understandably so…

Employers aren’t afforded much else in the way of protection from trouble employees. And once they’re in, they’re in.  So it makes sense having an extended probation period to make sure they aren’t serial dossers 😂

Probation period doesn’t actually

mean much.

If someone has worked for you for less than two years you can let them go with no reason required.

But keep your eyes peeled everyone, as our new government plan to give employees full protection from day1.  Yes, day 1.  So I guess you could hire someone, they never show up at all, and then they can threaten you will an employment tribunal if you sack them.

If anyone doubts how far worker protection could go, remind yourself of the rights dockers had under the Dock Labour Scheme...

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned is that its harder to claim you are self employed if all of your work is for one company.  Personally employing people has become so complicated and beurecratic, I can't see why a small company would do it anymore.
