The nature of dishonest people is that they portray themselves as honest. Some are luckily shit at it but some will catch you out. I don't have especially sharp senses for detecting these baddies so I rely more on hard engineering solutions like the money up front.

You don't need to be good at detection, just good enough at the job to be able to drop people at your discretion.

Generally, people pay. 

The figures we charge for domestic work are not worth not paying if you know what I mean. 
If you’re getting an extension done for 20 or more thousand, people can get funny. 
I’ve been genuinely stiffed just once in 30 odd years.

Depends, builders have materials, wages on a job that might take weeks/months to complete.

 

By and large we just have to make sure the chippers/trucks and combi cans are full

ye i meant more odd job trades people , just doing a day or a few days work similar to domestic tree jobs.
