The trick is to use it regularly Dan, before the buildup gets too bad.

WD40 and brake cleaner works for me because it's what I usually have to hand plus a good blow with the airline and a scraper made of plastic, repurposed old toothbrush kind of thing.

Will the Varioclean work on my chains? 
They seem to get very gummed up when milling some of the wetter woods. 

 

Ideally I'd like to soak them in something...not petrol.

Yeah I've ended up scraping with the screwdriver end of a combi spanner before , would be nice if it was easier.

 It shows chains on the bottle, but not had to use it for that. Only used it it to clean air filters.

Will leaving the plastics in methylated spirit/boiling water for an hour taint the color of the plastics etc? Don't want to fade them.

I use hot water and MUC OFF .

Good stuff and ok on carbon bikes and plastics
