Favourite Firewood

I’m sure this has been asked before, but what would your favourite firewood be if you included every aspect of the process from felling, processing, splitting, drying and burning it (as I’m sure many of you do).

Beech

[Paul in the woods]

Free.

 

Timber wise, possibly hazel.

Scots pine for a softwood, a bit messy at times though

Beech for a hardwood - though if I can get it. any thorn is good. Got an alder drying so will know this time next year if that is any good.

 

 

Would give some a miss, I'd take most other things in preference to oak for exampe.

Walnut

Robinia and Hornbeam for me. Readily available from jobs, splits easy, dries quickly and burns slowly.

The very best firewood has to be the wizened heartwood lower branches of an oak tree that doesn't need deadwooding but has been 😊

I’d love to get my hands on some hornbeam. I thought it was tough to split though because of the way the grain seems to to twist.

Are you saying you would rather not have oak? If so, what’s the reason?

Never tried that. Is there much about where you are?

Can’t say I’ve ever seen much in my

neck of the woods.
