Also, cynical me says, there was no indication of how old the saw was. 

 

I run Motomix (50:1 Ultra) in a milling saw and Ultra /E5 mix in all the rest.  Milling flat out just about through every pass. The implied lack of lube is quite a big concern. Plus....it's the first time it's been brought up.

I've seen/followed all the pump fuel vs alkalyte threads and Aspen vs Motomix and nothing about excess carbon and poor lube. 

 

Does no one pay attention to videos they see? It has a bad bearing and will need to be split. Are you trying to tell me you can split cases with the jug on them? I'd certainly like to see that.

 

If you got a saw that was very hard to turn over, would you just open up the muffler and have a look and just say you're done? Is that how you diagnose a saw that's hard to turn over? Just open the muffler and be done with it?

 

Richard has rebuilt more saws than you have cut trees. He knows what he's doing, and you would do well to listen to the man.

He almost certainly has forgotten more about chainsaws etc than I will ever know but I know that if you're going to work on a machine that 'Probably' has a bad bearing (his words) you clean it up first before stripping it. That comes from my apprenticeship training as a Fitter but hey maybe those old timers who trained me were talking out of their *****.

For the record I don't use Ultra and don't know why it should be a problem but as an engineer I find it interesting.

The US version of Ultra is a different animal, even different JASO rating. I seem to see lots of Ultra bashing videos but personally don't see the problem, I've run plenty and it's fine as have all the people who've run gallons and gallons of Motomix.

 

YMMV as they say.

No reason other than its what I have and I have an inbuilt  (probably irrational) suspicion for any two stroke oil that is synthetic, biodegradable or designed for boats.

Thanks. Have you ever had the cylinders off to look at the piston and rings up close?

Every 6 months I remove muffler just for curiosity on hard used mashines I only have deposit build up on my echo 360 but it is set to run  a bit richer never seen crankcase inside of any of my tools for last 10 years …..Sorry I have tanaka blower piston ring replaced it’s actually run on hp ultra for last couple years but it’s very old mashine one of my first, crank case was pretty dry but all bearings still fine .

Interesting.  I have removed the pistons of a few old saws recently due to piston age and wear (I do not think the damage was caused by fuel issues, but who knows I haven't owned any since new).  This is not scientific, but where 50:1 motomix had been burned prior to disassembly, the pistons and crankcases looked much dryer compared to 40:1 pump fuel and stihl red oil.  I do find it reassuring to be able to see an oil film.
