When it ‘first came out’ I don’t really think it was a huge surprise to most of the population 😀

That's because criticising a sexual relationship between two men on the grounds that one of them is 40 years older than the other, in a position of authority over him and had clearly groomed him when the younger man was still a child would be "homophobic". It's a catch-all defence shield that is wheeled out to conceal all manner of evils. There is no equivalent hate-crime injunction applied to heterosexuals to excuse their shenannigans, as heterophobia apparently doesn't exist. In the same way that racism can only be committed by white people against non-whites, but never the other way round.
