I don't get this, you want to keep the dead tree? Until when? Until the roots decay and it falls over? Until it's a pain in the backside removing a dead tree?

 Why not remove the tree now, killing it only ends one way?

I once had a job of ring barking most of the Sycamore in a woodland for bat habitat .
