You say its a kohler engine?

 

If so speak to these people Hancox Ltd | Petrol and diesel engines. Replacement engines. Puncture proof tyres, Amerityre, Briggs&Stratton, Kohler engines, Yanmar and Honda engine sales

 

They are really helpful and know what there on about.:thumbup1:

 

It could be rings which if just doing one cylinder would prob cost less then £50 on parts.

Head gasket set is around £20 and its not the worst job in the world to do.

 

Otherwise maybe look for a second hand engine or if you really like the machine buy a new engine if the rest of it is in good nick. Its only worth scrap metal prices otherwise!

 

My guess would be rings, but I would try swapping the ht leads/colis over first, oh and do a compression test. Although if it is high on compression it could just be the oil helping it out but if its really low you know there are some probs there.

Thanks mesterh with those kind of prices you have quoted i feel a little better. I will try the leads tommorow and i will follow up your lead as well. But for now i am going round my parents for a roast dinner and forget about machinary:laugh1:

That's a four stroke engine so adding oil to your fuel mix will foul up the plugs and possibly the carb too. Try tightening up the manifold to stop the leak, drain the tank and refill, check oil level, fit clean plugs and check for a spark before you go delving into the motor. Always look for the cheap simple fixes before the big toolbox comes out.
