Might as well finish the job mate, likely to die and if not the it will sprout horribly and fast back to the same size.

Nah. Gets cut back the same way every 8years or so. Always comes back and looks just fine. But if it doesn't ... that's fine too.

Fair enough, just had a run of cherries which have upped and died and look like hatstands in the front garden - I guess I don't notice the ones which have come back nicely.

Oh it'll look utterly pants for a while till it starts to sprout. But as it's right at the front of the house, in front of the main window, its either cut it back every once in a while or cut it down. It's getting turned into a lawn lamp over winter with 1000 LED's over the trunk/branches, so at least it'll still be the centre of attention, even without its top. If it doesn't start to sprout ... then more logs for the fire ;)

I find cutting and trimming coppice even more rewarding, wouldn't go as far as to say that I look forward to the winter to get at it exactly, but it's an upside to a mostly dreary time of year.

I suppose the other thing is that with soaring energy bills, whatever sort of firewood processing you do for your own use, you can now also do it smuggly!

Cherries are odd things.

The books will tell you that all the different varieties of cherry will either coppice or sucker depending, but not both.

I took out a pretty big wild cherry last winter, which is suppose to be sucker only, and it's sprouting up from the stump as well as any oak or maple.

I can only guess that there's been a lot of cross-breeding and hybridisation over the years and while a cherry tree may display the appearance of one type primarily, there's sufficient differences in the genes to make them potentially behave differently.

Just a thought.

More likely if grafted onto different rootstock maybe?

There's certainly an element of "I told you so" when talking about energy bills, wood burners, etc. When i initially said i was putting in a woodburner, many were sceptical and raised an eyebrow at the thought. Now skip ahead 6mths or so and most (still not all) are coming around to the idea/benefits of it.

I've had no luck on the Tip Site front as yet and tracking down free/cheap logs as been just as successful. But one of the neighbours has been renovating (gutting and rebuilding) their house and has about 2 pickup loads of nice clean timber off-cuts they want cleared. So just waiting on the word to go 'aquire' that for the fire. Might not be as relaxing at doing kindling, but at least its free  ;)
