Cutting Lap siding boards on a Bandsaw

Anyone built or bought a jig for their Bandsaw for cutting Lap Siding?

I have a customer looking to cut her Cedar into Shingles and I thought potentially cutting Lap Siding into short lengths might do the job if I can cut Lap Siding at all.

Woodland Mills have a system for cutting Lap Siding.

WOODLANDMILLS.COM

Norwood has a jig for Lapsiding and cutting proper Shingles.

Unfortunately Logosol seems to have nothing on the market as yet.

yes, I did it several years ago , out of 2" box hinged one side , lifting the other by  using a spare hydraulic spool on the autotrek driving the lift mechanism

I revised the clamping mechanism as it restricted depth i could cot down the cant,

I would recommend 3x2" box for top section as a big cant will pull the bars as you cut and release tension as you go down messing up accuracy of cut a little.

but cutting 100m2 of 200mm wide of larch in a few weeks with it.

Just a thought, but if you were to cut shingles that way on a bandsaw could you not simply raise the log for the tapered cut with a simple shim under the thing of of say a 1/4" slip the length of your log taken from your table saw or just a couple of wedges.

That said, I'm sure you may enjoy this video, and what they strive to achieve using the correct method all 1/4 split.... which sure needs to be practiced and remembered 👍

njoy this if you've not watched it before

I lost my first reply which was long so I'll do a short one;

It's strange that we first cleft planks from the round and now saw a rectangular cant and flip it in order to reproduce the cleft shape. Wouldn't it be logical to half a round log then dog one sector and index it through the saw?

To be honest I just enjoy learning how a successful process that goes back through the ages was exactly achieved, makes me want to buy an original blacksmithed froe and give it a go.. I've got access to plenty Cedar...

..But as someone once said,  'Time leaves on fruit on the tree'  ,cheers.
