Watch out for HMRC VAT fraud

Just received a VAT demand that looked totally plausible. Full name and details all look right. Thought I was set up with DD so double checked with the accountant who assured me I didn't owe them anything. He took a look at the letter and said it was the best fraud he had seen so beware.

How is that fraud? No dodgy BACs details to pay to, no similar-but-not-genuine websites.

 

Looks like a mistake on HMRC's part.

That’s no fraud it’s genuine! So you can now look forward to spending many hours if not day’s hanging on the phone trying to sort it out and maybe you will, maybe you will just get pissed off and ignore then it could come back to bite you or get your accountant to sort it that’s what you pay for

The way it used to work was to direct you to the official GOV.UK site and then your reference number wouldnt be accepted so you ring the number and this is the scammers, they then take the reference number and start calling you by your name and give you your address because they have your details registered under that reference number, they then try and get you to make the outstanding payment by debit card over the phone. Then once theyve got the payment and youve hung up they go to town and take what ever else is in your account.

It is simple, leave it to your accountant to deal with and don't worry about it. Just make sure your accountant is real!
