It’s all well and good waving your IR gun around but it’s quite meaningless.

Your open fire has an uncontrollable combustion. A choke in the throat might accomplish something but I’m not sure what. I guess it’s limiting the Venturi effect? Less draws meaning less fuel burnt?

Anyway, I love the work that’s gone into that open fire, what an amazing experience and something to remember your brother by.

Having just started properly reconnecting with my brother it’s something I can really appreciate

I really like tha millstone for a hearth!

I would also agree that your Rumford fire would be nicer, or more natural to stand around than any woodstove.

And with our unlimited(at least in my lifetime) "free" firewood  .  .  .

is there a big age difference between you?  There was eight years between my brother and I so we never really were on the same level until I reached my twenties.  Also it depends if you are too similar or too different to each other

 

I thought that the interesting point was the difference in temperature between the Aarrow which was full on with full air, and the Rumford

The millstone works quite well when the fire has died down, which it did after four hours and no extra wood, as it is a good height to sit on with your back to the glowing coals.  The gun showed that the temperature of every wall in the room was an even 19 degrees when it was about 2 degrees outside.

We’re actually quite close in age. 18 months between us. I think that’s the issue. We grew up competing for everything as we had nothing. Seemed to carry over into our 20’s and then then he moved to London. Now he’s back up in Scotland and we have similar interests so we’re working together on lots of projects. 
 

Would be interested to see some actual findings on the comparison but I guess in this day and age what’s the point? Not many building open fires. I certainly like yours though. What a cool build!

Came back from work today at 2.00pm and found the remains of one of the original logs still glowing

turned it over and it struck up and the brickwork at the back was 33 degrees and all the brickwork in the room was 24 degrees

I used to do all that you are saying with my open fire . I just do it the same with my log burner now .
