The Scandinavian country uses more solid fuel but has fewer issues with air quality…

Interesting on how they regulate stoves etc..

With regards to sweeping.  We burn a lot of spruce and pine in general.  The Kommune (council) send someone round once every two years, gratis.

We have a Varmepumper in the living room and ventilation system that circulates the entire house.  Problem is this year, we haven’t had a lot of rain last year.  The electricity is generally cheap in Norway due to the hydro generation.

Less water, higher prices of electricity.

I mean ridiculously high.  Peak prices are around 3.5 NOk per kw/h dropping to 0.37 NOk at night.

Hence firewood prices have increased and availability down due to demand.

In near future wind generated electricity will be sent under the North Sea to Norway from Blyth, Northumberland, England when less water in Norway and in return electricity will be exported to Blyth from Rogaland, Norway (Suldal) when a surplus and it is needed in the UK which might help stabilise future pricing of electricity in Norway to some degree.

Hopefully.  Proper expensive now.  After the last bill of 400 quid we have stopped using the Varmepumper and make sure we are turning all the light out and closing the bathroom doors.  The kids leave them open and the underfloor heating constantly kicks in.

Gonna try and get through this month and see what the bill is and work from there.

Wonder if more  heat pumps is reducing  firewood demand?

Britain was joint last out of 21 countries for heat pump sales and second last for the number of households that have the...

Wait until they find out the heat pumps aren't heating the water above 40C and the emersion heater is kicking in to raise the temperature to 60C, the required stored water temperature to kill legionella bacteria and the electric bill goes up also the building isn't warm enough on those very cold winter days in the UK with the poor insulation and additional heating is required/cost ... I think more wood stoves might be installed not less! Also if we fall out with Mr Putin, Emmanuel Macron or who ever else in future and they turn off the supply of gas or electric to UK it might be good to have a woodstove to fall back on.

Well good luck with that and winters in Norway can be cold in places I know having lived there.  We are paying (UK) £150 per month throughout the year with wood used for both central heating (three bedroomed house) as well as all domestic hot water (with exception of water for shower). We are self-sufficient in firewood.

Not sure how other models work but our IVT heat pump was set to heat the HW up to 60C once a week. I have adjusted it to only do it once a month now as real world legionella risks from domestic how water appear to be near zero.

The prices seem a lot higher in Norway than Sweden.

I know that the electricity prices spiked in Sweden in September, with the Swedes outraged at paying £0.138 per kwh. The 5 year average has been around about £0.05/kwh, though it was as low as £0.02/kwh in March and April 2020. It's settled back down to about £0.105/kwh now and is falling.

We're bidding on a house this week in Sweden with a bergvarmepumpe (geothermal borehole heat pump) and with a 4.25 COP (coefficient of performance) you've got a very low actual cost for heating (2.6 pence/kwh at present prices, but half that normally).

Is it just the very high electricity prices that are buggering up the economics of it for you at the moment Rich or is there something else in the mix? Is the weather that much more savage in Norway?

We just had a load delivered as due to being off sick I had t collected enough for the full winter.  Got a nice couple of piles of 2 year seasoned, Oak, Ash, Beech, Plum, Pear, Apple and Elm and various Pine and Spruce kicking about.

I tried to order a pallet when I got back to Norway from the Uk in September and my mate was already sold out.  So we found another supplier.  They delivered a tightly packed pallet of seasoned Birch for 2300 Norwegian Crown.

Burns fast for a so called premium product but is ok when supplemented with some bits of proper hardwood I have.

As for the cost per metre2.  No idea.

The high electricity prices have everyone over at the moment.

We have 2 kids who tend to leave lights on everywhere they go, leave the bog door open.  The list is endless.  In the past the electricity was so cheap it didn’t have much of an impact.  Now the electricity price is 10x the lower levels it does make a difference.

We also have a tenant in the rental flat under our house.  His missus must have the underfloor heat on full blast all the time.  Plus he is on his computer all day and night as he produces hip hop.

His rent covers bills as well.  We have a module in the fuse board that just monitors the usage from the flat.  In the past it was so little and so much hassle we just used to charge a fee and include it in the rent.

Now the prices are up, maybe it is time to start monitoring again.
