Stealing work rant!

Nothing wrong with doing that on a speculative basis, but to target known planning apps is low IMO. I think the councils shouldn't publish details of the the applicant.

I see your point Tom, but unfortunately that is the whole idea of the council publishing details, so "interested parties" can object to the application.

They have to publish the address/location of the tree, otherwise the public can't comment on the proposed action which would defeat the object of the application.

All you need is the address, and send a letter to the "owner/occupier"

I agree with Dean about not using companies that have to chase after me, but the majority of people aren't that clever.

The majority of tv advertising is a con, yet they all flourish from it. During the snow I watch a bit more daytime tv than usual! Every add was "what if your boiler breaks down" or what if your car warranty runs out" or "what if you can't afford you own funeral" etc. etc. etc. just give us some money every month and it will all be ok!!

This is advertising stuff that peolpe don't need, yet they still buy into it. If you advertise directly to people who actually do need your product then you are onto a winner, and chasing planning applicants is probably as easy as it gets.

Still bad though!

One thing I would never ever do is employ someone who has contacted me, not me contact them.

That includes door knockers, telephone cold callers and fly posters.

IMO if you can't get the work in through advertising or recommendation then you either need to downsize or do something else.

Sorry but thats how it is with me. To scour planning apps and get work that way is desperation and very sad. Someone who does that imo cannot be trusted

Whats a fly poster? do you mean leaflet dropper?

IMO its dog eat dog world some float some sink, the only people I know who have made a success in business are the type who would shaft you in a second, thats not my way of doing things, its just an observation...........

I suppose it just boils down to what we personally think is morally right or wrong.

I would guess that a marketing specialist would say that someone putting in an app is the ideal customer to target, they have a genuine need for your service.

FTR I dont do the above or door knocking but I have done leaflet drops and sent info out to commercial companies.

Times are hard and I cant blame anyone in trying to win work as long as they dont cut any corners that I think are unacceptable:sneaky2:

I have a lot of "marketing experts" in my family/friends and the things they say I should do makes me quite angry. To the point of not wanting to discuss any aspects of my business with some of them. Morals don't seem to come in it.

I will take notice of a leaflet that says, "New to the area" such as a new fast food place, or business's getting established.

But

For example, a well known double glazing company cold called to give me a quote.

I told them not to bullshit or barter, just give me the bottom line.

Yhey did the whole "Let me ring the boss routine" and the quote went from £11K down to £3K.

I just booted them out of the house

I called some guy out of tompsoms local, he came in at £2800 straight away no messing

I totally agree with that Lee.

My resolution this year is to become much more of a ruthless businessman.

However, a fair few of my customers have become friends over the years so I treat them accordingly, fair work, fair money.

I would never stoop to chasing planning apps though. It's a snake belly low gypo trick IMO.

They are scum Matty. I'm glad your customer stuck by you.
