somtimes the cap will twist and go into the lock posistion without you noticing so your end up keep trying to put it in , .. if you take it out and hold the underside of the cap where the cord is and twist it it will undo allowing you to try again to put it on , ..

that was probbaly the worst explanation ever but im sure someone will know what i mean !!!

When I saw the title of this thread I thought still had finally sorted out this shocking piece of design/ engineering.

Dissapointed that its not the case. It is NOT FINE - it is a PIECE of S$$T. It caught me again just the other day, It catches me out about once a month at least.

If it's so ok! Why doesn't the petrol cap do it??

Good thread mate --- SORT IT OUT STIHL, MAKE A CAP THAT STAYS ON !!!!!

Just give it a tug when you think its on. Sometimes it will seem on but then half way up the tree you discover you`re covered in oil.

Been there. Like has been said there is a knack to it.

As all the above with the dont fill it up and push down when fitting but also give the cap a blast with compressed air every now and then. Sometimes a build up of crap between the moving bits doesnt help.

Couldn't agree more. The ones we have most problems with are on the pole saws chain oil tanks. It takes the slightest bit of dirt/wood chip to make it impossible to close. Absolute pain. These lids are not progress or better when the don't work
