020T or MS200T

I was thinking that the 020t was the better build quality and that stihl had slipped a little on quality with the introduction of the ms badging

 

was only asking as i have just parted with an 020avs that i now need to replace so i was thinking the 020t was the better bet than the ms200t so is probably what i will go for as i have found a good used 020t for sale

 

It doesnt need to be used all day every day so i dont need a brand new saw and knowing that there have been a lot of well documented (via forums) problems with carbs and general build quality on the ms200t's i will for now go for the older saw i think

The old 020T was a better built saw.

 

The 200T is the same saw redefined and tweaked not all for the better imo.

 

There are some changes the the engine, the ports are different and the carb is definitely different, all to run leaner not really create more power so to meet stricker emissions etc. Well, this is my understanding and observations anyway.

 

You will find that the 200t are not as tough, but you cant buy new 020t so it dont matter

 

BTW 020av is still a nice saw:thumbup1:

I know i cant get a new 020t but as i am only looking at a used saw i just wanted a few extra knowledgeable heads to confirm what i was thinking - that buying used i was better off with the older saw rather than the newer one

 

The 020av that i got rid of i would still have had if all of the things wrong with it i had been able to get parts for to fix but everytime a new problem cropped up and i went to stihl the parts where discontinued and not having a working chain brake made me call time on that old saw.

Dont really have a budget in mind just a gut feeling that says for the occasional use it will get alongside my other saws i would rather spend on and older saw with a better build quality than a newer saw made down to a price

 

If i had still been able to get chain brake parts and the few bits i needed to make the old 020avs safe to use i wouldnt even be looking for a replacement for it

If your buying a second hand 200T you do have to make sure its not one with a dodgy carb or it will cost a bit for a new carb at least or a lot more due to running lean ie poss cylinder damage.

 

I'm sure there are a few on here with a good second 200T that wouldnt have your pants off

Thats why the preference is for an 020t rather than an ms200t

 

Cant really be bothered with messing with dodgy carbs if i can help it would rather have a slightly older better built saw without the inbuilt problems

That is the idea. the 020T has been changed and modified and the name changed. Therefore, not available. The OP ask if the 020T is a better build quality... I would have to say that 'it was' a better build quality.

I have several 020's and 200's for spares and most of the parts are interchangeable and IMO "identical".

same as most other replies - we have 3 020t's from around 97/98 - all run fine after years of being abused (all the outer casings are original) . i'm not convinced the 200t would last as well.

saying that, i'd never in a million years pick up one of the 020's over my 2009 200t

Although most parts are interchangeable the older plastics in some places are thicker ie on the chain brake handle and side casing which is why they last longer.

 

The engines seemed to last longer too but thats prob because the newer ones run leaner.
