Large cherry - needs out?

Moved into a new house over the summer - nice mature cherry in the garden but lots of dead branches and big splits in the bark and evidence of boring. Fear it's past it's prime and needs to come down in a controlled way (before it comes down in an uncontrolled way!)?

Are you asking whether it should come down or just telling us about your tree?

If it's the former, there isn't a huge amount you can do for that tree so you should fell it before it fells itself.

My advice would be to remove the tree and recover what you can for firewood if you if you burn wood.

Plenty of space to drop it in a oner . As said Fire wood .

@J@mesC plus One on the felling as long as you plant another tree , if the location is apprpriate , leave trunk at bird table height ( saves stump grind and chainsaw chewing into any nails that are in the trunk  ) K

You'll need permission to fell the tree if it's in a Conservation Area or is subject to a Tree Preservation Order also check that a bat is not using that crack before felling/cutting up.

Cheers - no conservation area or TPO on this one. Will double check on bats but no sign of anything in there - you can see right into the crack from an angle behind the bark.

Not in a C A unless there is a blanket TPO . just inform them of works .
